Looking For Mollie “ is a photographic journey into the life of Mollie, a Bornean orangutan who lived at Melbourne Zoo from 1901 to 1923. In an era when animals were often showcased for entertainment. Mollie became known for her human-like behaviors, such as smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. following her death, Mollie was taxidermied, returned, and displayed in her cage at the zoo, transforming her into both a beloved icon and a subject of fascination. As part of my Master of Fine Art (MFA) capstone project, I explored Mollie’s story through the archives of Melbourne Zoo and the Melbourne Museum. Through photography, I aim to honor her legacy while reflecting on the that role taxidermy plays in preserving the stories of animals.
